Year 6 and 7 | Human Development and Sexual Health unit
Over the next few weeks, students in Year 6 and 7 will begin their Human Development and Sexual Health unit in Health and Life Skills.
In Year 6, topics to be discussed will include the physical, emotional and social changes that may occur in puberty including the reproductive systems, their functions and how they are connected to the changes that are occurring. The impact of viewing sexually explicit media will also be addressed.
In Year 7, a review of the typical changes that occur in puberty will be done including how these changes need to be considered when making decisions related to sexual health. The importance of communication with a partner when deciding about sexual activity (e.g. range of intimacy comfortable with, delaying sexual activity) will be discussed and will include the concept of consent. Identifying and preventing sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs) will also be addressed.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact Martha Boyce (Health and Life Skills Coordinator) or your child’s HLS teacher.
