Y9-12: Is your son interested in science, technology, engineering or math?

Designed with student success in mind, the High School Saturday Program encourages participants to begin to explore science, engineering, math and technology in a community-oriented, confidence-building environment. Classes are divided by grade. There will be a class in both session one and session two for students in Years 9/10, and 11/12 during the 2018-19 school year. Registration for session one and two are separate and participants do not need to register for both sessions. Please read the course descriptions carefully to see which courses are offered to which group during each session. Each session takes place over the course of three Saturdays and participants will spend all three Saturdays in the same course.

All classes run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with a short break at halfway point at the instructor’s discretion.

Program Descriptions
The Quirks of Lasers and Electricity

Come and bear witness to the strange phenomena that is Engineering Physics!  This course delves into the theory, demonstration, and applications of Lenz’s law and electromagnetic induction. Students will learn about quantum interactions that lead to the photoelectric effect and laser diffraction. They will analyze the social, economic and environmental impact of electrical energy production, and technologies related to electromagnetism.

Geotechnical Engineering: Foundations of Cities

Around 200 million years ago, there was a single supercontinent. As time passed, the plates drifted, and the separate continents that we identify today were formed. During this gradual process, layered-earth resting upon these plates recorded information about the climate and environment like a time capsule. This course explores the very foundation our cities rest upon. Students will study the landscape and geotechnical concerns central to designing modern cities from the ground up. Students will engage with simulations which see them serve as a city planner, battling against disasters and balancing out population demands.

Cybersecurity

Billions of terabytes of sensitive information are transmitted on the internet every day. Whether it be from the use of credit card data for online shopping, or Doctors accessing health records, our information is only a few keystrokes away from landing in the wrong hands. Cybersecurity measures allow us to transmit this information securely away from the prying-eyes of unauthorized individuals. Despite strong consumer and privacy protection laws in place, we still face the threat of having our privacy invaded and the possibility that our confidential information may be compromised. Serving as cybersecurity investigators, students will learn about the importance of cybersecurity and investigate some of the tactics used to keep our data secure by applying these concepts to various case studies.

The Magic of Calculus

The Magic of Calculus program runs for six Saturdays and it is recommended that participants have completed Functions MCR3U.

Calculus enables us to describe and project almost anything that is in a state of change – literally and physically! Whether it be population-growth, the data aggregation that makes Artificial Intelligence possible, or the motion of a rocket venturing into space, calculus is the tool that makes this all possible.  In this six-session program, we get introduced to the two revolutionary advances in mathematical thinking—differentiation, and integration.

If you see that a course is wait listed on the registration page, that means there are no available spaces. If a space opens up in the course, those on the waitlist will be notified immediately in the order that they registered.

If this is your first time registering for one of our programs, you will be prompted to create an Active account. The account making process happens after registration. If you are successful in getting a spot in the course, you spot will be held for you as you create your account. There is no need to rush this process.

There is no way to create an account before the registration date.

Bursary

If the fees for this program create a financial barrier, please consider applying for an Engineering Outreach Bursary. You are eligible to apply if you are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person with demonstrated financial need. Download and complete the bursary application form (Form can also be found on our website) Submit the completed form along with your most recent Notice of Assessment to the email outreach@ecf.utoronto.ca

Once the forms have been submitted, U of T will contact you with the results of bursary in the following weeks prior to the start of the program. Please note that if you are on a waitlist or have not registered for a course, your bursary application will not be assessed.

Cancellation Policy

Any cancellations made between the time of registration and 2 weeks before the start of the program are eligible for a refund minus $50 administrative fee.

Any cancellations made within 2 weeks of the start of the program are not eligible for a refund. In order to receive a partial refund for a cancelled program, the cancellation must be made by the following dates:

Jr. DEEP Saturdays and Engineering High School Saturdays Session 2: January 26th, 2019.
