Y2 and FY dance on May 6
The annual Y2 and FY dance will be held at UCC on Friday, May 6. Here are few key points to keep in mind:
1. The dance will be held in the student centre.
2. The dress code is smart casual. While some guests may choose to dress in a more semi-formal way, this is definitely not the expectation.
3. Entrance to the dance will be by the west parking lot doors by the Hewitt Athletic Centre.
4. Doors will open at 8 p.m. and close at 9 .p.m, with no in/out privileges.
5. The dance ends at 11 p.m.
6. Tickets are $10 per person, $20 per couple, and will be sold to the boys by our social steward during lunch in the coming days.
7. Any UCC student attending with a date must provide that person’s name, school name and an emergency phone number before he can buy his tickets in order for us to be able to contact his date’s parent/guardian, if necessary.
8. As always, the school’s drug and alcohol policy will be in effect, and security personnel will check each guest before he or she enters the dance. Teachers will chaperone the dance along with the new board of stewards.
Students should always be aware that the school’s drug and alcohol policy is always in effect at all school functions, including dances. They should also be aware that our sister schools have the same expectations for their students in place. To be completely clear about it, this means that if your son is going to the UCC Y2 and FY dance, neither he nor his date, if he’s bringing one, may have, use, share or be under the influence of any alcohol or illegal drugs, including marijuana.
The boys are told: “If there is a reasonable suspicion that you or your date has broken any of these rules, your parents will be contacted to take you home from the dance immediately. If your parents can’t be reached, then Toronto Police Services may be contacted to take you home. Depending on the outcome of subsequent investigation by the school, further consequences at school could include being banned from the next UCC dance or other event, conduct concern, suspension, conduct probation, expulsion and/or police involvement.”
We remind the boys of this every year because we don’t want to have to go down this road. We want our students to make smart decisions to avoid putting themselves or their dates in harm’s way. Every year, however, there are always a few boys and girls who get caught in violation of the drug and alcohol policy.
Sadly, some of these cases result from parents hosting pre-dance dinners at which alcohol is consumed, not only by their own children but also by other people’s children. For parents who insist on hosting an event, we strongly recommend that the guest list remain small and manageable, and that the parents actively supervise to prevent students from sneaking alcohol into the party.
The law is clear: “If you allow an underage BYOB event to be held on your property, you may be held liable for injuries suffered or caused by a guest who is intoxicated. This is true whether the injuries occurred at the event or after the guest leaves. The courts are likely to be even more critical of your actions if you bought or provided the alcohol for the underage event.” (excerpted from CAMH)
