Year 1 boys will take part in the Walk for Homeless Youth (#WHY17) for the eighth time on Tuesday, March 7.

This is a significant part of our ongoing service learning initiatives and another opportunity to expose students to community service, ignite their passion to help others and raise awareness regarding those less fortunate than themselves.

The annual Walk for Homeless Youth (WHY) provides young people an opportunity to help their peers who are experiencing homelessness. It challenges students to put themselves in the shoes of someone experiencing homelessness and to get a sense of what it feels like to be cold, tired and a little bit hungry. WHY helps young people build empathy and understanding for their peers who are less fortunate and don’t have a place to call home. There are at least 10,000 homeless youth in Toronto every year, and as many as 2,000 on any given night. Funds raised through WHY go to shelter, food and programs at Eva’s Initiatives for Homeless Youth, a Toronto-based organization that provides shelter and transitional housing for 123 young people aged 16 to 24.

More than 500 students from area schools participated in WHY and raised more than $12,000 last year. Organizers have set a goal of raising $14,000 for this year. Students are asked to collect pledges from family members, friends, teammates and neighbours to help reach the goal.
