Watermelon for YWCA women’s shelters June 7
The Year 5 community service leaders learned about two homeless women who died in Toronto this past winter, and wanted to help. We listened to a CBC radio interview with the co-ordinator of the YWCA women’s shelters. We found out there was a new women’s shelter opening close to the school. We reached out to find out their needs. The biggest need is funding for the shelters.
With this in mind, on Friday, June 7, the Year 5 community service leaders will be hosting a fundraiser for the YWCA women’s shelters. These are for women and children fleeing abuse. They offer a free, safe, caring home and the counselling and support women need to heal and plan for the future.
This fundraiser will take place during morning and lunch recess for boys in Years 3, 4 and 5. The event is a watermelon eating and watermelon popping event. The point of the event is to try and pop the watermelon with elastics. Gloves and protective eyewear will be provided. Five elastics will be sold at a price of $2. This price includes a slice of watermelon. Please help us support our local YWCA women’s shelters.
