University counselling for returning Year 11 students

Each year the university counsellors meet individually at least once (and generally several times) with every Year 11 student in order to have a preliminary discussion about his plans for post-secondary education and a career.

Parents are welcome to participate in one of these meetings. We find that boys who’ve established a personal relationship with their counsellor at this time are much better prepared for the post-secondary application process in Year 12.

To this end, we would like to remind all boys and their parents to complete the student questionnaire 2017 and Parent Questionnaire 2017 and return them to Leigh Berndsen in the university counselling office by Thursday, Sept. 14. Interviews will begin during the fall. Appointments will be made only once both the student and parent questionnaires have been received. These forms provide counsellors with the information they require to prepare for the initial meeting.

It’s important to note that, for the majority of students, their questionnaire is the next assignment for the career studies half-credit, carrying a value of 15 per cent towards the final mark for this compulsory course. For this reason, the student questionnaire will be graded and the usual late penalties will apply.

Students will be asked to create and reflect on a résumé later in the fall term. This will be their second assignment for the year. The course will conclude in Year 12 with several assignments directly related to the post-secondary admission process.

This year’s June report includes a comment regarding progress to date in career studies. Because this course is delivered over a boy’s entire Upper School career, no final mark is reported at this time. Further comments will appear in June of Year 11, and then in January and April of Year 12. On the last of these occasions, a final grade will be generated for the Ontario Student Transcript.
