UCC/BSS fall production

If this is your country, where are your stories? Tell me your stories …”
attributed to a Blood elder

Vimy is one of the stories we felt needed to be told. It has been called the moment where out of the fire of war a country called Canada was forged. It’s really not a play about war. It doesn’t question war as being right or wrong. It simply allows us all to stand witness to what appears to be a large offensive through the small actions of individuals. It’s been argued by noted historians that the First World War’s battle at Vimy Ridge was the symbolic birth of Canada as a nation.

The UCC/The Bishop Strachan School production of Vimy will be staged in UCC’s lecture theatre on Thursday, Nov. 23, Friday, Nov. 24 and Saturday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. A display will be set up by archivist Jill Spellman and dramaturge Celia Bowker. Our attempt is to share the direct impact of this war on our larger community, including some teachers and actors from the cast.

You may order your tickets through Dale Churchward at dchurchward@ucc.on.ca or buy them in the creativity centre from Friday, Nov. 17 until Nov. 24.

As a cast and crew we’ve been considering more questions then answers.

Why do we pass over moments in history yet mythologize others? Is there a gap between our memory as a country and our recollection as individuals? What’s the no-man’s land between reality and memory, truth and dream, history and mythology? These are the questions that arose as we rehearsed and prepared this production. We hope you go away with many more questions as a result of Vern Thiessen’s compelling play, Vimy.
