Blues prevail in varsity soccer early bird tournament
The varsity soccer team began its 2014 season with the Early Bird Tourney at SAC on Sept.13 and 14 . The first game was played in wet and cool conditions. The saturated pitch was so wet that rookie Olivier Mugabo found a crayfish on the field while warming up! Despite that, the Blues managed a win over De La Salle College with a goal from veteran striker Kal Shaw straight from a corner. The second game against Ridley College was just as wet but the Blues came out gunning early with beautiful goals from Olivier Mugabo and Kal Shaw. RC came back with a late goal but the Blues secured the win thanks to late heroics by rookie goalie Simon Broer. The win lifted the Blues from the swampy pitch to the turf for the final in the main SAC stadium against an undefeated Appleby squad who had earlier defeated the SAC and Cresent squads.
The Blues were down to a bare 11 players due to numerous injuries and conflicts. They battled well, passing the ball skillfully on the turf. The weather improved but did not help to produce any goals after full time. A penalty shootout would determine the outcome. Veteran Blues keeper Seb David stopped the first two AC shooters while vets Djordje Todorovic and Connor Wilkinson netted theirs. AC scored their third while rookie Darwin “Natural Selection” Jimal scored the Blues third coolly. When the fourth AC shot struck the post, the outcome was sealed and the Blues lifted the pre-season cup.
A crayfish and trophy isn’t a bad beginning to the season for “The Firsts.”
