U of T mathematics academy programs

The University of Toronto’s mathematics academy programs are aimed at providing students in grades 9 to 12 with experience in math and math research.

The program strives to introduce students to concepts not typically covered in the standard curriculum. Students will gain knowledge and skills in various aspects of math and will have a chance to meet with members of the department currently involved in math research.

The purpose of this program is to introduce students to an in-depth topic which isn’t normally covered in the curriculum. Rather than lectures, the program will be run with a heavy “discovery” component where students do most of the work by working on carefully selected problems to figure results by themselves. The topic will be creative, fun and somewhat abstract; in other words, what mathematicians consider “real math.”

The math academy is offered twice per year, each with different content. Successful applicants to the March break program are automatically accepted to the summer program.

March break: Monday, March 13 to Friday, March 17

Summer: Monday, Aug. 21 to Friday, Aug. 25

The academy runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

All students are provided with snacks and a break from 12 to 1 p.m. each day.

The cost of the program is $325 plus tax for the week. Bursary applications are available on the Bursary Application page.

All sessions will take place at the downtown campus of the University of Toronto. Exact location details will be sent to registered participants prior to the start of the first class.

Students must first apply for the program and be accepted in order to register. Successful applicants will be informed of their acceptance as soon as possible. Applications are taken on an ongoing basis until spaces are filled.

The application consists of two parts: a form and a completed quiz. Click here for more information.
