U-16 hockey at St. Michael’s College
The U-16 hockey team participated in the 30th annual St. Michael’s College School Hockey Tournament on Tuesday, Jan. 12. UCC has been attending the tournament since it started; the neighbourhood rivalry spans every sport played at the school. There’s no doubt that hockey is the signature sport at St. Mike’s. One only need walk into their campus arena to see the photographs and banners of alumni who’ve played in the National Hockey League.
On Tuesday the team played preliminary round games and two boarders were prominent fixtures in the outcome of game one. Joe Howe (Year 2, Wedd’s) was the goalie; he earned a well deserved shutout, making wonderful saves when UCC was killing penalties. Barrett Hayton (Year 2 – Wedd’s) scored two goals in what turned out to be a 5-0 victory over Gonzaga School.
In game two UCC played St. Michael’s College. The atmosphere was electric when the entire student body came out of their classes and poured into the stands to watch another chapter in the well-established neighbourhood rivalry. UCC carried a 2-0 lead into the third period, but the large crowd in the stands boosted the home team to tie the score and then score the winning goal with 36 seconds remaining to earn a 3-2 victory.
