Student-led conferences coming up

0314teachercartoon2For new and returning parents, our first round of student-led conferences will be held on Thursday, Nov. 2 and Friday, Nov. 3 for Year 8 and Year 9 students.

These bi-annual conferences in November and February are an important opportunity for students and their parents to hear from teachers and discuss progress.

These conferences are student-led. Students are trained by their advisers to lead these conferences with their parents and subject teachers. The purpose is to help students better understand their own learning progress while encouraging them to take responsibility and ownership over their learning and develop self-advocacy skills.

In preparation for these conferences, students will be asked to complete an academic reflection chart where they’ll reflect on these four areas in each subject: engagement; approaches to learning; performance; and area for improvement. Students will be asked to bring this chart with them during the conferences and use their reflections to begin the conversation with each teacher about their progress, in the presence of their parents.

We ask students in Year 8 to both complete this chart and submit it to their senior house adviser as part of the careers course requirement which contributes to their final grade.
