Strong effort at CAIS basketball tournament in Montreal

The varsity basketball team competed in the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools’ national tournament last week in Montreal, from Nov. 23 to 26. Co-hosted by Selwyn House and Lower Canada College, independent schools from across the country competed. The Blues first day of competition saw them handily beat both Sacred Heart from Halifax and Stanstead College from Quebec. The boys were then realigned into a pool which saw them play a strong Rothesay-Netherwood School from New Brunswick. With a stout defensive effort and some timely shooting, the boys were able to come away with the victory.

The next opponent, Ashbury College from Ottawa, featured some talented young men including a national team member, but our Blues were unfazed. Yet again, using their defense as their main driver, the boys kept things close until the final minute. Unfortunately for the Blues, they came out on the losing end, suffering a four-point defeat, which meant they would be facing off with the Ridley Tigers Prep team in the semi-finals.

With a chance to compete for the tournament championship on the line, the boys played with determination and hustle, keeping the game close and trailing by only four points with four minutes to go. A few unlucky bounces timed with some great guard play from the Tigers saw our Blues take a 10-point loss. Such a strong showing this early in the season is a strong indication that this year’s squad is ready to compete with top programs across the province. Great start to the season boys, and good luck the rest of the way!bball_vars2016_sas0749_281 bball_vars2016_sas0696_231
