Speakman – McCatty Bird Walk on Dec. 14
Dear UCC Community,
On Sat. Dec. 14, UCC’s Winston McCatty Fund hosts a morning of bird watching at Tommy Thompson Park. The morning begins at 9 a.m. and runs until noon. There is no cost but if you are interested we ask that you complete the registration so we can know the number of attendees. Guides will be present and we hope to observe a great deal of wintering waterfowl. This is also the time of year for snowy owls in the park.
The walk coincides with the annual Toronto Christmas Bird Count so sightings will be logged on eBird for science. The McCatty Fund is named after Winston McCatty, a science teacher and swim coach, who created an outdoor club at the College in the 1940s. Dr. John Speakman’44 was a member of Mr. McCatty’s club and his time exploring the ravines of Toronto led to a life-long love of birds and nature. For the past 16 years, the McCatty Fund has sponsored the Prep’s annual Owl Trip.
