Save the date for the PO Speaker Series on October 9
Date: October 9
Time: 7 p.m.
Place: Upper School
Join us to hear mental health in sport pioneer, Krista Van Slingerland, speak about “The mentally healthy high performer: staying well to peak perform”. She will be speaking to the boys at Assembly that morning as well.
Krista is the co-founder of both the Student-Athlete Mental Health Initiative (SAMHI) and Canadian Centre for Mental Health and Sport (CCMHS), and is completing her PhD at the University of Ottawa. She is a conference All-Star and national award-winner for the University of Ottawa women’s basketball team. Krista is also a policy writer for the Canadian Medical Association (CMA).
Participation in sport or any other high performing activity can be a remarkably positive and formative experience, helping children and youth develop positive identities, strong character, a sense of responsibility and positive mental health. So why is it that an increasing number of high performers are sharing their stories of struggle with mental health?
Krista walks her audience through the darker side of sport and other high performing environments, exploring factors that can trigger the development or exacerbation of mental health challenges and disorders, confronting the stigma engrained in sport culture, and sharing her own story of living with mental illness as a high performance athlete. Drawing on research from the field of performance psychology, Krista shares strategies for flourishing in high performance environments.
RSVP here by Wednesday, October 3.
