Rowan’s day at the Prep: Friday September 20
Dear Prep Families,
This message is to inform you of this year’s Rowan’s Day at the Prep on Friday, September 20, 2019.
Rowan’s Law and Rowan’s Day were established in honour of Rowan Stringer, a teenage rugby player who passed away from second impact syndrome, as a result of sustaining multiple concussions. Her day is celebrated on the last Wednesday of September, to help awareness of concussion and concussion safety.
In 2018, Rowan’s Law was passed in Ontario. This law was passed to bring awareness and education to help protect people who play sports or active games in schools. It also helps educate teachers, parents/guardians and coaches about concussion prevention and recovery.
Thanks to Rowan’s Law, all sports organizations and schools in Ontario now have rules in place around concussions. Even when we do our best to prevent injuries there is always some risk. Rowan’s Law helps coaches, teachers, and parents/guardians identify when a child has suffered a suspected concussion, that they should immediately stop participating in physical activities and helps them to determine when it’s safe to play again.
On Friday September 20, 2019, as we stop to reflect and honour the day, we ask the boys to wear purple the colour that symbolizes Rowan’s day.
Thank you from all of us at UCC Prep.
