PYP Exhibition May 8, 2020: Information for parents

Year 5 is the last year of the International Baccalaureate – Primary Years Programme (PYP) at UCC and students participate in the PYP exhibition. The PYP exhibition is a collaborative, student-directed, research-based, action-oriented culminating project in the PYP. Students lead their own inquiry in the spring term and we will celebrate the completion with the PYP exhibition with our community, including parents, on Friday, May 8, 2020 from 1-3 p.m. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend.

Since early in the school year, I have visited Year 5 classrooms for exhibition periods. During this time boys have been talking about issues that they care about and identifying reasons why they care. These reasons include personal connection or experience, concern for our planet or the future, and compassion and empathy. Year 5 boys have “dissected” the PYP transdisciplinary theme WHO WE ARE and have begun to explore the United Nations Goals for Sustainable Development, to consider other issues that are of interest to them. We call this time in the exhibition process, “frontloading”.

Recently we have switched gears with a focus on Action. These conversations connect nicely to students’ TAKE ACTION projects in Health and Life Skills. Boys have written personal and group “action” statements. They have begun to consider the idea of “stakeholders” who students have defined as “people, groups, or things who are impacted by the issue”.

We continue to return to the idea of EMPATHY as we progress in the early stages of the exhibition process.

Each classroom’s current event activities help to fuel students’ curiosity. In the new year, we will begin to narrow our focus, working towards the early stages of research and group coordination before March break. The focused exhibition work happens from March break until exhibition day, May 8, 2020. Most of the exhibition work happens at school with scaffolding and supports in place. We ask that you please keep non-essential absences to a minimum during that time.

On Feb. 26 from 8:30-9:30 a.m. we will host a parent session about the exhibition. In the new year, also watch for regular updates in Heads Up. If you have any questions about the PYP exhibition please do not hesitate to contact me at djojic@ucc.on.ca.

We hope you are enjoying rich pre-exhibition conversations at home.
