PYP Exhibition: An introduction

Year 5 students are in the last year of the Primary Years Programme at UCC and, as such, the students engage in the PYP Exhibition, which is collaborative, student-driven, research-based and action-oriented culminating activity in the PYP.

Students lead their own inquiry in the spring term. We celebrate student learning and action with parents and the rest of our school community on Friday, May 13. Details will be provided as we approach this date.

Students have begun to think about possible issues to explore for their PYP Exhibition projects. Regular discussions of current events and exploration of kid-friendly news sites have given way to explorative conversations in class.

Recently, students dissected the transdisciplinary theme of Who we are: An inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human. They thought about how the issues students care about may fit in this global context.

Students also considered issues they are already passionate about and discussed why they care, including personal experience or connection, concern for our planet, compassion and empathy. Each class made a co-operative “word art” based on the reasons they care (see 5F’s word art here).

Students will continue to explore aspects of the PYP Exhibition each cycle during PYP Exhibition periods in addition to discussions with their form adviser.

Parents can expect to be invited to a PYP Exhibition parent information session in the new year. In the meantime, should you have any questions about the PYP Exhibition, do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s form adviser or PYP Coordinator Dianne Jojic.
