Primary Art students take part in community art installation

To start this school year, UCC students from Kindergarten to Year 12 participated in a community art initiative. This project provided a creative exploration of individuality and a representation of our diversified community.

In the first part of the project, each student was asked to showcase and celebrate what makes them unique. Their tools were paint and a rock. The youngest students were inspired by the book Only One You by Linda Kranz and a similar project by Sharon Elementary School in Indiana. This storybook follows a young fish who is eager to adventure into the world and his parents, who share wisdom before he goes. With its focus on celebrating the special qualities of each individual, the story’s message that “there is only one you in this great big world — make it a better place” rang true with our learners. 

Students in SK to Year 2 were prompted to depict themselves as a fish, using colours, shapes, and lines in a personalized one-of-a-kind way. 

Students in Years 3, 4 and 5 were challenged to represent themselves — their singular mix of interests, strengths and talents — using imagery and symbols. Not only did this art project provide an opportunity for students to become reacquainted with the art classroom, it also introduced a range of painting techniques, such as colour mixing and brush skills. 

In the second part of the project, individual rocks have been united to form a collective art installation.  On October 18, the Prep rocks joined with contributions from the Middle and Upper School near the entrance to Grant House. Seeing the myriad individual components brought together to represent our community is exciting and inspiring.
