Preparing Year 7s for transition to Upper School

With the Spring Term in full swing, it is also time to look ahead, and for the Prep Leaving Class, this means thinking about their transition to the Upper School.

All families have already been asked to complete and return a form outlining any family connection to the Upper School House system and name preferences for the grad composite photo and certificate. Students without any previous family connection are placed in a House according to numbers, academic background and co-curricular interests. House placements were emailed to parents last Friday, April 5.

All Year 7 students will complete an overnight retreat at Norval with Y10s who are in the same Upper School House. Depending on your son’s House placement, the overnight retreat at Norval will take place from April 23 to 24, or April 24 to 25. They will also tour the Upper School with their Year 10 counterparts before leaving for Norval.  Please see the chart below for when each Upper School House will enjoy their retreat at Norval:

Depart Tuesday, April 23 Return April 24 Depart Wednesday, April 24 Return April 25
Bremners X
Howards X
Jacksons X
Martlands X
McHughs X
Mowbrays X
Orrs X
Scaddings X

On the day of their trip, students should come to school with their bags packed and ready to go to Norval. They will change into their casual clothes after school. Students will be camping overnight, either in tents or unheated cabins. These will be assigned by grade, so your son will  camp with other Year 7 boys overnight. It can get quite cold at night in late April, so please ensure that your son either has one sleeping bag good to -10 C or two sleeping bags so he can sleep with one inside the other. The bags should be “mummy” style, with a hood that he can draw around his face.  The suggested clothing list for the upcoming trip can be found by clicking this link.

*Please note that the return trip bus will drop students off at the north (Kilbarry Road) entrance to the College at approximately 3:30 p.m. Boys may also walk down to the Prep with faculty supervisors and wait in the Bitove Lounge until parents are available to pick them up.

During their retreat, Year 7 students will complete a student profile (personal interest information, academic interests, information about participation in the Arts Program and Athletic Program, participation in outside activities, etc.) to be shared with his Upper School Senior House Adviser and his Year 10 mentor.

After the retreat, information about your son’s student profile will be forwarded to your son’s Upper School Student mentor. Upper School Year 10 mentors will then write a letter to their Prep counterpart. The Upper School mentor will invite a response from the incoming Prep student.

Year 7 Parent Evening: This information session will take place on Wednesday May 1 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Student Centre at the Upper School. Prep Year 7 parents are invited to a presentation/question and answer session about the Year 8 program and Upper School.  The Upper School administrative team will provide an overview of the Upper School experience and respond to parent questions. It is strongly suggested that at least one parent attend. Year 7 boys do not attend this event.

Y7 Transition Meeting: Prep School faculty will meet with Upper School faculty to share valuable information regarding your son’s learning strengths.

It is our hope that these events will help prepare both you and your son for the transition to the Upper School.

Sincerely,

Gareth Evans gevans@ucc.on.ca
