Orange Shirt Day at the Prep

On Thursday October 3, the Prep comes together to honour and remember a crucial piece of Canadian history with Orange Shirt Day. Orange Shirt Day was created as a way to remember residential school survivors and their families and teaches our students the concept that every child matters.

The name Orange Shirt Day honours survivor Phyllis Webstad’s story of having her new orange shirt taken away from her on her first day of school at the Mission. The date of the annual event was chosen because it is the time of year that children were taken from their homes to residential schools. Click here for more history on the origin of orange shirt day.

To participate we invite students to wear an orange shirt on October 3rd. Warm weather dress is still in effect. Orange shirts will be available for purchase the week prior for $10 in the Bitove lounge. Purchase is optional and proceeds from the sale go to the Gord Downie-Chanie Wenjack Legacy Fund.

Elder Garry Sault of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation will be visiting the school next week as well. He is a widely recognized speaker and traditional storyteller who has worked extensively with museums, schools, universities, and arts and government organizations, as well as with our own Norval outdoor school, sharing his knowledge about treaty history, Indigenous culture, and related current affairs. Mr. Sault will engage in a discussion about identity with a group of Year 3 students at the Prep.  He will also meet with members of the Upper School’s Truth and Reconciliation Club and attend a meeting of UCC’s Reconciliation Council, which is a group formed in 2018 consisting of students, faculty, administrators, parents, and alumni dedicated to raising awareness of Indigenous issues, rights, and histories, and to working toward implementing specific Calls to Action that have been identified by the school from among the TRC’s 94 Calls to Action. All are welcome to attend that meeting.
