Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test for Year 9 students

The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) is used to determine whether a student has the reading and writing skills required to meet the standard for understanding reading selections and communicating in a variety of forms expected by the Ontario Curriculum across all subjects up to the end of Grade 9.

The OSSLT is a requirement of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

When: Tuesday, April 10
Who: Students in Year 9 or are new to the College in Year 11 or Year 12, or who didn’t write the test last year when in Year 9 will write the OSSLT.
Where: 8:30 a.m. in the Lett Gym (8 a.m. in CC3/302 for students with testing accommodations). Students are asked to report to the gym by 8:15 a.m. and to CC3/302 by 7:45 a.m.

How do we help students prepare?
• All students will be provided with hard copy sample question and answer booklets to review and complete for practice after the break.
• OSSLT preparation workshops have been scheduled in all Year 9 English classes and in learning strategies classes for after the March break.
• An additional workshop is being offered for new students not in Year 9. They’ll be messaged separately with dates and locations.
• Hard copies of additional OSSLT resources are available in the Wernham West Centre for Learning as well as on the CFL’s Haiku site.

Please contact Kathryn Barnes or Jennifer Ferguson if you have any questions.
