Norval fall open house: October 20

Please join us for our annual fall family open house at the Norval Outdoor School on Sunday, Oct. 20, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Stephen House will be open with food and refreshments available. Seasonal family open houses at Norval are held on Sunday afternoons in October, January, March and May, and are free of charge. The idea is to open Norval to UCC community members, and to offer a variety of outdoor activities for you and your family to enjoy.

Fall at Norval is a time of beautiful colours. There will be lots of evidence of wildlife as most animals are preparing for winter. Come join us for an outdoor getaway with friends and family. Dogs on a leash are welcome too! We will be offering a wide variety of activities including:

  1. Plant a tree at Norval: Norval needs trees! Help us grow healthier, more natural forests at Norval by planting a tree while you are at our open house. You can help in one of three ways: i) Bring your own tree. Any native tree species will do – Maple, Oak, Cedar, Pine, Willow, and so on. You can use one of our shovels to plant it, or bring your own; ii) Plant one of our trees.  We have purchased a number of native tree saplings for planting at the family open house; or iii) Plant some seeds. We have lots of trees native to Norval, but they are too far away for their seeds to reach the plantation forests. With the help of Norval staff, you can collect seeds from large healthy trees like Oak, Hickory and Maple and plant them in the plantation forests, where they are most needed.
  2. Beekeeping: Did you know that we have honeybee hives at Norval? Join Ms. Tanz, our resident beekeeper, to visit our hives and learn how to extract delicious honey. Please note that younger children (Grade 3 and under) may not be able to visit the hives, as our bee suits may be too big for them.
  3. Fall colours hike: come explore Norval at this beautiful time of year. Our staff will take you to new areas of Norval that you may not have seen during previous visits.
  4. Apple Picking: Pick some apples to take home, and help us make some fresh apple cider!

Please register online or contact Leanne Gardner in the Association Office at lgardner@ucc.on.ca, 416-488-1125, ext. 2232. to let us know the number of people attending.

Directions to Norval: Take Highway 401 west to Winston Churchill Boulevard. Follow Winston Churchill Boulevard north and go through the village of Norval. Continue straight ahead. The entrance to the Norval property is on your left, 1.2 kilometres north of the village stoplight. The drive takes approximately 50 minutes from UCC in light traffic.
