The Wilder Library has had a very busy start to the year! Classes from SK to Year 7 visit the library with their inquiry or language and literature teachers once or twice a cycle. All boys have access to the library throughout the school day.
Our younger boys listen to stories which complement and support their units of inquiry. Boys learn to navigate our large print collection using the online catalogue. Fun but sometimes chaotic “scavenger hunts” provide practice to locate the books they may need for research projects or for pleasure. Students are offered book suggestions and reading guidance, both formally and informally, and they are encouraged to borrow books to take home.
Older students engage in more formal library orientations, as well as discussions about what it means to be a reader, and their “reading rights.” New books and favourites are routinely suggested and every form has their own “favorite reads” list, which will lengthen throughout the year as boys suggest their own recommendations. Reading time is always built into their library classes.
Research projects have begun this term, including rocks and minerals (Year 1), ancient societies (Year 4), Indigenous nations (Year 5), and natural disasters (Year 6). These research opportunities cover the importance as well as the mechanics of citing sources, and academic honesty.
The library is hosting three “reading buddy” groups this year. The Year 1s are partnered with 3F and SKs are partnered with 4O. These buddies are participating in the Forest of Reading program and reading the Blue Spruce nominated selections together. They will read a selection of new Canadian picture books and participate in a province-wide vote for their favorite book in April. Our third group comprises Year 7 French fast-track students reading French books with their SK buddies.
During lunchtimes our Kids’ Lit Quiz teams are practicing for the competition scheduled for Monday, Jan. 21. We will be taking three teams of Year 6 and 7 students to compete against other Toronto schools by answering 100 questions about children’s literature. Our students have been busy preparing by reading classic children’s books and answering practice questions together.
Our second author visit this year was today, Dec. 13, when Rebecca Bender, author/illustrator of the Giraffe and Bird series presented to the SKs, Year 1s and Year 2s about her writing process and creating the illustrations for her books.
As always, we encourage boys to borrow books over the winter holiday. Students in SK to Year 3 are welcome to come by after school with a parent to borrow books. Older students may come independently to sign-out books for the break.
