Wedd’s alumnus Michael Park speaks to boarders

On Sunday, Nov. 7 UCC alumnus, Michael Park volunteered to come back to campus (virtually) to meet with UCC boarders. Michael took time to provide insight on his four years as a UCC boarder, and how that IB experience helped pave his way to the University of Toronto.

Following graduation from UCC Michael decided to study Science at the University of Toronto. He focussed primarily on Math and Physics; spending his time working under professors in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He told students that it was the relationship-building that he learned in boarding that taught him how to self-advocate at a big university like U of T, although he said that his decision to join Trinity College also contributed to plenty of new student friendships. It was the ability to self-advocate that assisted him as he reached out to professors to earn summer research projects.

Following four years of undergraduate work, Michael returned to South Korea to complete two years of mandatory military service before returning to U of T to complete a Masters in Science. Michael then transitioned to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Michael said it was difficult to leave U of T, but wanted to step away from the comforts of Toronto and try a new university experience. There was a wonderful question and answer period that followed Michael’s presentation. This was a great example of how the boarding network pays dividends years down the road.
