Message from Year 4

Hello from Year 4,

We’re in the midst of our “Early Societies” inquiry unit. We began our unit discussing how we learn about history. In our trip to the ROM, we learned about Ancient Egypt and got to handle actual artifacts from ancient times. Our trip was a great springboard for our exploration of early societies. The boys have selected different early societies to research. This unit supports our fall focus in using informational text. In lieu of a book club, we’re reading different myths and the boys are completing “myth centres” to investigate a variety of mythological characters.

In math, we’re wrapping up unit three. We explored patterns in multiplication fact families (up to the nine-times tables) as well as an introduction to simple algebraic expressions. Please continue to focus on reviewing basic multiplication facts at home. Being able to quickly recall these facts will help boys accurately solve the questions.

In our “Words Their Way” word study, we’ve completed our first assessment. The boys were asked to bring home the assessment yesterday. Attached to the assessment is a letter to parents explaining the assessment results. The boys must be doing word sorts at home with their Word Study words. A short video was posted to SeeSaw yesterday to demonstrate different types of word sorts.

If you haven’t had a chance to visit the Bitove Lounge recently, you may be missing out on an incredible art show. The “Group of 43 is exhibiting its paintings inspired by the iconic Group of Seven. Many thanks to Ms. Roberts for organizing this beautiful show. The landscape paintings are amazing!

We’ve noticed many missing items in Year 4. Please ensure all your son’s clothes are clearly labelled. If your son has lost an item, encourage him to check the lost and found (by the dining hall) on a daily basis. While we appreciate a heads up about missing gear, it’s your son’s responsibility to keep track of his belongings.

The weather has definitely changed. Unless the temperature dips below -25, the boys will go outside for recess. Please remind your son to bring appropriate clothes for outdoor recess.
