Heads Up

Welcome to Heads Up, your one-stop source for news about your son’s upcoming activities and events.

Message from Year 1

The Year 1 boys are fully engaged in our new unit of inquiry, Structures. The central idea of this unit is, “Communities have built features to support our needs.” Using their knowledge about different types of materials and their properties, the boys are eagerly designing and planning different structures around our communities. We are starting to think like engineers when considering the function and need of a structure before choosing materials, creating a design and constructing the desired structure. We have tied these BIG ideas to our art investigations where Ms. Kastelic has the boys collaboratively engaged in building their own community. As a class, we discussed the needs of a community and each student has chosen a structure they will create in art class. Once their structures are developed, we will use their newly built creations and knowledge to build an effective community. We will consider the placement of their structure, providing accessibility to the user and needs of a community in this step of our final project. Try asking your son about his art structure with the following prompts:

  • What structure are you building?
  • Who will use your structure and what are some special features of it?
  • Why do communities need this structure?
  • What materials will you use to create your structure?

While exploring strong shapes in our unit of inquiry, we will compliment their knowledge by exploring 2D and 3D shapes in our new math unit. We will explore attributes of multiple polygons and 3D shapes, create patterns using pattern blocks and explore symmetry.

We are excited to welcome you to the Year 1 classroom tomorrow, Friday, April 12 for the Student-Led Conferences. The boys are busily preparing and thrilled to be sharing their learning with you!
