Message from Year 1

After exploring the mining process and the different kinds of mines, the boys looked at how mining for minerals can change the natural environment. Since we use minerals every day, we decided that mining is necessary, as long as it can be balanced with the three Rs (recycle, reduce and reuse). We also introduced a new R to that list: Reclaim! Through environmental efforts, such as planting trees, mining companies can reclaim the land after they are done their mining. With this thought in mind, we weighed the pros and cons of open pit and shaft mining. We then thought critically about whether or not we would like to live in close proximity to a mine. The boys wrote persuasive letters to the Mines R Us company that was proposing the creation of a mine across the street from UCC.

In math, we are looking ahead to chapter 4, which will focus on measurement and basic facts. The boys will learn to read a thermometer and use different measuring tools such as measuring tape, the personal foot and the standard foot. They will also extend their knowledge of telling time to include the quarter hour.

Skating started last Thursday. The boys are enjoying their time on the ice and getting more confident every day. Thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped tie skates. After this two-week block, we will continue the skating unit with two more weeks following the winter break.

In language, the boys are working on their self-editing skills using our class writing checklist. They need to be sure they include:

  • Neatest printing
  • Correctly formed letters
  • Capital letters
  • Punctuation
  • Finger spaces
  • Personal spaces between letters

The expectation is that, using this checklist, each student checks over his own work before showing it to a teacher. This helps the boys catch any mistakes, like missing words, and helps to build further responsibility on the page. You can feel free to use this checklist for any home writing tasks.
