Message from Tom Babits, Head, Primary Division
Last week we were witness to a magnificant Grade 5 Exhibition. In this self-directed inquiry, the boys studied: “An inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human.”
These remarks are from my comments to parents at the close of the Exhibition: “These boys are open-minded and have a very real curiosity about the world. They are other-minded; they care about issues way beyond themselves. These boys believe they can choose action and make a difference.
One group chose to learn about equity issues. A quick story I heard yesterday: One of these guys was at a lacross game and had to play defense, not his usual position. He’s not the tallest guy for his age and he had to mark an attacker twice his height. At some point in the game the giant forward from the other team said, “You slash like a girl!” Our “Form 5er” guy responded instantly with, “What are you, sexist?” After that, he didn’t hear another word from the stunned giant.
When you know what your values are and are willing to stand up for them – the courage piece- you can indeed really change the world.
I’m absolutely thrilled to announce that the new Prep Playground (phase 1 of the Learning Grounds project) will open next Tuesday, May 19. All boys in SK through Form 5 will have the opportunity to explore and enjoy this magical new adventure area.
All the best for a wonderful May long weekend.
