Heads Up

Welcome to Heads Up, your one-stop source for news about your son’s upcoming activities and events.

Message from the Prep Leadership Team

Dear Prep families,

Our sincere thanks to your children for their engagement in the various learning activities presented in anticipation of, and during, the recent National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Terry Fox runs and activities also took place recently, and we look forward to the day when we can return to a whole-community run.

This past Tuesday evening we offered opportunities for families to learn more in detail about the PYP and MYP frameworks, as well as engaging with our colleagues from the Wernham West Centre for Learning. We’re grateful for these opportunities to engage and learn. Should you wish to follow up regarding the PYP or MYP frameworks, please reach out to Dianne Jojic and/or Gillian Levene respectively.

This week’s Middle Assembly was particularly outstanding; thanks to Assistant Head Gareth Evans and the special guests we featured. I strongly recommend Middle parents review the assembly, as one strong feature was Mental Health Week. Gareth discussed the various supports offered at the Prep, when privacy can and cannot be maintained, and psychologist Geoff Sorge explained to us the differences between mental health and mental illness.

We are excited to restart our Middle Music instrumental program, according to all Toronto Public Health guidelines and OMEA suggestions. We will pilot the program with the Year 7 students first, with a two-week delay to restart with Year 6. Families have been notified; please reach out to Paul McGarr with any questions.

Please note our early dismissal day on Friday, Oct. 8. Employees will spend the time engaged in professional development (PD). Discrete dismissal times are below and are also featured in your family calendars and on our “sandwich boards” at high-visibility spaces at the Prep.

Halloween is fast approaching, and we are excited to partner again with our PPO to offer some fun and COVID-safe activities, including an expanded trick-or-treating route around campus for all Primary students.

Treats offered at the various stops along the route will, of course, be peanut-free, but days such as Halloween can be anxious for teachers and parents of students who have anaphylaxis for various foods. Please ensure your child is, according to CIS policy, wearing their epi-pen. Please contact Scott Cowie, our Dean of Student Life and Wellbeing, if you have any questions.
