Message from SK
Christine, Sanchia and I want to thank all the parents who came out to the three-way conferences to celebrate your son’s learning. We’re so proud of them and all that they’ve accomplished. We’re very close to celebrating another milestone in the SK classroom, the 100th day. Please congratulate your son on this momentous occasion.
Our “What’s the Matter” unit is well on its way. The boys have been having lots of fun learning about the three types of matter, how to describe them and examples in the classroom that they know. Ask your sons all about it. They’ve also been learning about how matter can change from one state to another. We’ll be learning about the water cycle, sinking and floating, and participating in more experiments.
In language, we’re continuing with our “Handwriting Without Tears” program. We’re learning to print small (a, c, e, i, m, n, o, r, s, u, v w, x ,z ), tall (t,l,k, h, b, f) and descending letters (g, y, j, p, q) correctly and how to form these letters on the lines. Help your son continue this at home by using the terms small, tall and descending letters when they write. We’ll also start to sequence a story and record what happens in the beginning, middle and end.
In math, we’ve begun talking about measurement, (non-standard, standard). We’ll begin to use some measurement tools (rulers, cubes, paper clips and the King’s foot) to measure objects in our classroom. We’ve been focusing on addition and subtraction number stories. Ask your son to tell you one and a strategy he uses to solve it. As well, we have begun identifying and ordering “teen” numbers. Ask your son to tell you what they are and how he knows it’s a teen number.
