Message from SK

The SK students have begun the “Who We Are” unit of inquiry where they’re exploring the central idea,“Living things grow and change when their needs are met.” We began the unit by unpacking this big idea and introducing the criteria for determining if something is living or non-living. The provocation of eggs in an incubator ignited a great deal of curiousity and discussion from the SKs. This resulted in a good inquiry into what kinds of animals lay eggs and, further, into how various animals are classified. The opportunities for writing and reading about this were plentiful. When the eggs were revealed as chicken eggs, the boys learned that they will take 21 days to hatch. Closer to the hatch date, the eggs will be streamed live so that families will have the opportunity to observe from home, should the hatching begin in our absence.

From our discussion about eggs, we moved to the human life cycle and focused on the senior phase of the process. We were touched by the thoughtful anecdotes that the boys shared about what a senior is and how they could support a family member or friend in this phase of their lives. The boys had the opportunity to put their thoughts into action when they visited Christie Gardens Apartments and Care. It was beautiful to watch our youngest learners as they assisted their new friends by serving them tea and tidying up after their shared snack. This inter-generational learning will be continued at a later date this year when the SKs will plan and host the senior residents for an afternoon visit to UCC.

This unit naturally lends itself to sequencing and patterning in math. The students are learning about the smallest unit of a pattern and are having ample opportunity to make connections to the patterns they observe in the world around them. They recently identified life cycles, weeks, months and seasons as patterns and are enjoying labelling the smallest unit within them. The boys created a pattern book on their iPad using the app called “Book Creator.” When they notice a pattern in their environment they photograph and add it to their collection. They will upload these to Seesaw when completed.

The students have loved seeing photos of their peers as infants in their earliest stages of the human life cycle on our classroom door. This has served as a writing provocation as they are recording their guesses as to which photo is connected to which boy. In the days to come, we will invite family members into our classrooms with younger siblings to discuss what is required to care for a child at various stages in the life cycle. With spring arriving, please pay close attention to the weather. As we say goodbye to winter toques, it will be time to welcome back sun hats and sunscreen. Until the ground is dry, please ensure your son has waterproof shoes for outdoor play.
