Rock on! After a delicious lesson on the rock cycle (we made S’mores) the boys explored the layers of the earth. We made plasticine models of the layers and a diagram to compliment them. They are on display outside of the classroom if you have a chance to take a look.

This week’s theme is Digging In! After each being assigned a different mineral, the boys collected information about how it is used in everyday life. From there, the class created a poster using PicCollage on the iPads, describing one way their mineral is used. Knowing that we use rocks and minerals every day means that we have to get them by mining. We have begun our inquiry into how we get the different rocks and minerals from the earth. The class will be working through mining workbooks to compare the difference between surface and underground mines. Looking with a keen eye, we will explore the benefits and drawbacks of each kind of mine with special attention to the ecological impacts. Our culminating activity will be to decide which type of mine is the best and why. We also made pie charts and bar graphs on the iPad in ICT class, after tallying and organizing the rocks in the classroom.

In reading centres, the boys are reading a “textbook” on rocks and minerals to compliment their inquiry learning. They are absorbing many facts and sharing wonderful information in informational posters and class discussions.

In math, we continue to work in chapter three, paying close attention to times to the half hour, adding and subtracting using a number line and creating and extending patterns. Come check out our new math wall in the 1G classroom, complete with number stories the boys have written themselves.
