Message from Derek Poon, head, Intermediate Division

derek poonMonday, Nov. 17:  First dress required; Principal’s assembly, 8:30-9:30 a.m.; fall sports teams presentations; Laidlaw Hall;
Thursday, Nov. 20:  Fall music night, 7-9 p.m., Laidlaw Hall

The BBC (Blues Booster Club) will publish its end of season recap for all fall sports teams very soon. Please be on the look out for it.

Selections for winter school sports teams are being made this week and should be final by sometime next week. Should your son not be selected to the team for which he tried out, please take the opportunity to help him reflect on the experience and process the rationale given for the decision. Private conversations with coaches can often help to offer specific advice and direction for improvement. What’s most important about managing disappointments or setbacks of any sort is a positive reflection on the experience, with an outlook to learning from it. When done effectively, it results in a plan of action which ultimately contributes to personal growth. Always know that there are many sources of support at the College for any boys who struggle with this and we have resources to help get them through. Boys or parents can feel free to speak to coaches, advisers, teachers, health centre staff, administration or anyone else at the College with whom they have a comfortable relationship.

Student photos for Year 1 and Year 2 boys are approaching and will be taken on days when the boys are required to be in first dress. Year 2 are scheduled on Monday, Nov. 17 and Year 1 on Monday, Nov. 24. The boys aren’t required to do anything other than wear first dress and attend classes as usual. I’ll coordinate and communicate the schedule with subject teachers for both grades. Proofs with the option for purchase will be sent directly to parents for consideration.

First Dress: Also known as number 1 dress, is a requirement on every first day of the week from after the November long weekend until the start of warm weather dress in the spring. It honours the principal’s assembly on these days and is also required on special days throughout the school year. The following is the description of first dress in the Upper School Family Handbook, pp. 140.

– Blue blazer with the UCC crest
– Conservative white or solid light-blue dress shirt
– Grey flannels
– College or house tie
– Dark socks and polished leather shoes
