Friday, Nov. 7 – Monday, Nov. 10: no classes; November long weekend
Tuesday, Nov. 11: First dress required; special schedule; Advising 8:30-9 a.m.; Remembrance Day assembly; Laidlaw Hall; 10:30-11:20 a.m.

The feedback from faculty on the student-led conferences (SLC) for iDiv boys was very positive. Here’s a brief point form summary:

  • good ownership of learning shown by the boys
  • as expected, there was some variance in how boys conducted their SLCs but overall, teachers were impressed and encouraged by the boys’ self assessments
  • the most well-prepared boys led the most insightful conferences
  • those who were less well-prepared revealed areas for growth which teachers and advisers will address as appropriate
  • some subject teachers reported seeing immediate positive changes/improvements as a result of the SLCs
  • hearing directly from the boys at the SLCs makes it easier for subject teachers to address and support their learning

Please feel free to share your thoughts about this format for iDiv parent-teacher interviews with your son’s teachers, advisers or any member of the admin team. As always, any and all feedback and suggestions to help us to be better and to improve the learning environment are welcome.

Tryouts for winter sports teams will continue or begin next week and boys interested in making a team must find out the necessary details and communicate with coaches as appropriate. Good luck to all tryout candidates.

Student photos for Year 1 and Year 2 boys are approaching and will be taken on days when the boys are required to be in first dress. Year 2s are scheduled on Monday, Nov. 17 and Year 1s are scheduled on Monday, Nov. 24. Details will be shared as these dates approach.

Regular Dress: The November long weekend marks the end of warm weather dress and the beginning of regular dress. (Some call this regular school dress or winter dress.) The following is the description of regular dress in the Upper School Family Handbook, pp. 139.

Students are required to wear the following at all times during the school day from 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. during classes, assembly, house meetings, advisory meetings and appointments, examinations and while in the corridors and other public areas of the College:

– A conservative colour dress shirt or stripe with a UCC tie
– A sports jacket, blue-crested blazer, blue crested College sweater or UCC blue-fleece top
– Grey dress pants (not cotton) worn with a dark-coloured belt.
– Dark socks (blue, grey, black)
– Polished leather shoes.

First Dress: Also known as number 1 dress, it’s a requirement on every first day of the week from the November long weekend until the start of warm weather dress in May. It honours the principal’s assembly on these days and is also required on special days throughout the school year. The following is the description of first dress in the Upper School Family Handbook, pp. 140.

– Blue blazer with the UCC crest
– Conservative white or solid light-blue dress shirt
– Grey flannels
– College or house tie
– Dark socks and polished leather shoes

This weekend gives us a most welcome extended break from the well-established routines of school life. Whether you and your family take a brief vacation or stay at home, please find an appropriate balance of catching up, staying on top of work, rest and relaxation and of course some family time. Have a safe and enjoyable long weekend.

Thanks for reading.
