Laptop return for Year 12 students

This is to inform you of the process for returning the Macbook Air laptop, with the correct Apple power supply, at the end of your son’s exams.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of our leases, the laptops aren’t available for purchase. The boys are responsible to get all of their personal data off of the computer before it’s dropped off.  Their Google Drive will be deleted early in the fall, but it’s important that they get all of the files that they need out of that drive before the summer. The machines will be wiped immediately, so once the machine is dropped off there won’t be another opportunity to access it. All files on the computer will be deleted soon after it’s dropped off. Please ensure that all important data is removed. We’ll ensure that it’s wiped clean.

The help desk hours are 8 a.m to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, and it will be happy to receive laptops during these times. It’s expected that the laptop has remained in the protective case and no damage has been incurred  Any damage found on the computer, however, will be billed to your UCC account. The damage protection program will still apply.

You must also hand in a working Apple power supply that was made for the MacBook Air. The cost for the replacement power supply is $120 and, if necessary, your account will be billed accordingly. Please ensure that any stickers directly on the laptop are removed. Charges could apply if the machine has excessive sticker residue.

We ask that the laptop is dropped off between your son’s final exam and noon on Monday, May 27. It can, of course, be dropped off anytime before May 27. Failure to meet the May 27 deadline could mean being charged the full replacement amount of the computer. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact Jim LaPlante by email or by phone at 416-488-1125, ext. 3326.

Timing is crucial, so we ask you to start preparing now for this transition. Your son needs to plan to move all documents on to a hard drive or transfer them to a new computer. The onus is on students to prepare so they can ensure the laptop is brought to the help desk no later than noon on May 22.

Please note that your son’s UCC email and Google drive space will remain active until Sunday, Oct. 27., 2019 This is done to give graduates time to move their important documents off of the Google drive and ensure that any important email connections have been informed of their new contact information. This should give them more than enough time to deal with the transition. After this time, the account will be deleted and you’ll no longer have access to any files or emails that were stored there. If you need the email address for something other than academic purposes, I suggest you create a new email now and start communicating officially with the new address. This is to address the concern that some students use their UCC account to communicate with athletic clubs.  However, you will no longer have access after October 27.

A note will be sent to UCC email accounts in the middle of October to remind users of the account deletion.

Congratulations to your son on completing his studies at UCC, and thank you for your consideration in this matter.
