International Service Trips Information Evening for Parents/Students/Faculty, Monday, May 11, 2015

As an International Baccalaureate school, one way to develop global-mindedness is through the provision of international trip experiences. Whether they’re faculty-staff organized trips, or planned and supported by third-party providers, UCC is committed to provide a choice of opportunities.

On Monday, May 11 at 6 p.m., parents and students are invited to attend presentations for our current 2016 March Break international trip offerings. Student numbers and the commitment of UCC adult supervision will determine whether these trips go forward.

Currently we are presenting:

Poland/Austria – Holocaust Education Trip

Ms.Rachel Metalin will once again lead a Holocaust Education Trip, where students will travel to Poland and Austria. Differing from the traditional Service Trip, it will offer an International Educational Trip for students that wishing to learn more about history, the Holocaust, and 20th century genocide.

In Poland, students will visit multiple locations including: Warsaw, Plaszow, Tykocin, Lublin, Majdanek, Krakow, and Auschwitz-Birkenau. In the Austria, students will visit Mauthausen Concentration Camp, the Hartheim Center and have the opportunity to explore the city of Vienna.

Veteran guides will accompany us throughout the trip to ensure students receive the utmost from the experience. Upon return, students will organize and facilitate a CAS project to help disseminate what they have learned to the UCC community.

This is targeted at senior division students and can accommodate up to 24 students. Consideration may be given to Year 2 students.

Kenya – Lewa Wildlife Conservancy – Service/Cultural Experience

Upper Canada College is planning our 10th Anniversary trip to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in northern Kenya under the leadership of geography teacher Craig Parkinson.

The Lewa 2016 trip is guided by a number of fundamental values and working principles; including: global awareness, self-efficacy, and civic engagement. This is not a trip for idle individuals, but is rather about students working together as a team and making long-lasting positive contributions to each other and their colleagues in northern Kenya.

This trip aims to improve upon the conservation and educational goals of Lewa and the efforts of over 56 UCC students who traveled to Lewa before them.

The trip is limited to 8 students and is targeted at senior division students.
