Important: Cell Phone Policy
The evidence is mounting that allowing students to be on their cell phones in class is detrimental to their learning and success. For example, a 2015 study by the Centre for Economic Performance found schools that enforced classroom cell phones bans reported a 6.4% increase in test scores.
In order to prioritize the learning experience of all of our boys and to support them to achieve their best, we are enforcing a strict no cell phone policy in all learning environments this year. This includes classes, assemblies, advising and House meeting times. Unless specifically instructed by the teacher, students cell phones will neither be visible nor audible at any point while in these learning spaces. If a student takes out their cell phone, it will be taken from the student and stored for the remainder of the day in a locked drawer in the Front Office. Students names will be recorded and on the second offence the school will issue a detention. Repeated offences will require further disciplinary intervention and will be subject to the graduated discipline process we employ at the College.
We are asking that parents do not contact their sons via cell phones during learning times between 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and again from 1:10 – 3:30 p.m. In the event of an emergency, please contact Upper School reception and we will ensure that your son contacts you. We appreciate your support in ensuring that boys in classes are not distracted by their phones.
