ICT message about social media

Following Chris Vollum’s message to the boys on Nov. 12, I took the opportunity to discuss social media with our Form 6 classes. We watched the short Science of Character video and linked it to social media use. We discussed the need to be careful about online interactions and how the boys’ use of social media reflects their character, who they are and who they want to be.

Prompted by the poem cited in the video, the boys created their own writing pieces about social media and character development. I was very impressed with their understanding and ability to see the need to be cautious with their use of social media, but also their optimistic views around how it can be used to positively motivate and affect others.

Some parents have requested resources to help with understanding and managing their son’s online interactions. Here are some sites that you may find useful:

  • Common Sense Media provides independent reviews, age ratings and other information about all types of media. They have an entire section devoted to parent concerns, including: screen time; cyber-bullying; privacy and Internet safety; Facebook, Instagram and social media; learning with technology and special needs; and learning difficulties.
  • Netsmartz offers resources for children of all different ages, educators and parents. Their parent section includes information on cell phones, children as victims, cyber-bullying, email and chat rooms, file-sharing, gaming, identity theft, inappropriate content, Internet safety, predators, revealing too much, sexting and social networking.
