FY and IB1 parents: Does your son have an interest in Jewish literature?

Great Jewish Books offers high school students an opportunity to engage with modern Jewish literature in an inspiring environment. The program brings rising high school juniors and seniors from across North America to the Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Mass., on the campus of Hampshire College, to study with literature professors. Students read poetry together, analyze works by the likes of Isaac Bashevis Singer and Philip Roth, talk about literature, history and identity, and meet for conversations with contemporary authors. Past visiting writers have included acclaimed novelist Allegra Goodman and renowned poet and critic Adam Kirsch.

The program will run from Aug. 2 to 9, 2015, and every admitted participant will receive a scholarship for the full cost of tuition, room, board, books, and special events. No specific background — no knowledge of languages or particular writers or Jewish religion — is required. Our past participants have come from a wide spectrum of backgrounds, from atheist to Orthodox and everything in between. The ideal applicant is simply a mature, curious teenager with a love for literature and a demonstrated interest in Jewish culture — someone who shines in classroom discussions of texts.
