Fundraiser | Relay for Life

Relay for Life is a cancer research fundraising event run in co-ordination with the Canadian Cancer Society and will be hosted at UCC for the Prep and Upper School within the next couple of weeks. Relay for Life was introduced to UCC two years ago while the mother of two Year 12 students was living with cancer. The event brought the entire COSSOT community together, featuring 400 students and raising more than $150,000. Unfortunately, COVID-19 interrupted our plans to host the same in-person event this year. Nonetheless, cancer is still affecting Canadians as COVID-19 protocols prevent patients from hearing about their life-changing diagnosis from a doctor but rather through an automated message. Vital operations are being rescheduled to avoid the threat of contracting COVID-19. Most unfortunate of all, patients can no longer be visited in hospital by their family members or friends.

Despite numerous challenges faced by the Relay Team, we will soon be hosting a “Relay Day” virtually for students and faculty to attend. Relay Day will feature online games and activities such as Among Us, a luminary ceremony, a bulletin board where students can display who they Relay for and students will have the opportunity to hear from cancer research speakers. Relay Day aims to increase awareness of the impacts of cancer, provide community support and raise funds to increase the number and quality of cancer support programs that are so desperately needed right now.

Your donations will go to programs such as:

Camp Goodtimes – A camp for childhood cancer survivors that is going virtual for families to stay connected in the community and have engaging activities to do at home.

Cancerconnection.ca – an online community for cancer patients and family members to connect with one another about various cancer-related topics.

Travel Reimbursement – we are reimbursing the costs of travel for cancer patients so they can get to and from their cancer-related appointments.

Cancer Research which has been slowed due to transfer of resources to the development of vaccines.

Our goal is to raise $75,000 dollars, and as COVID-19 has limited funding, patients all across Canada need your support more than ever. If you wish to be so gracious, you can make a tax-deductible donation by visiting here. You can also support your child’s house by making a donation to his house.

Thank you for your continued support,

The Relay for Life Team
