Fundraiser | The Daily Bread Food Bank
Dear UCC Community,
Food insecurity has become a major problem in Toronto, and sadly many children are going to bed hungry.
Due to the increased unemployment created by the Covid-19 pandemic, food banks around Toronto are seeing a 29% increase in demand for their services. Families trying to financially recover from the pandemic have been forced to use food banks, leading to a 200% increase in new food bank users.
The Daily Bread Food Bank supplies food to nearly 200 food services around Toronto which receive close to 15 000 visits a day and are in dire need of food at this time.
Ethan Gomes and Owen Eubanks, two Year 12 students, have partnered with the Daily Bread Food Bank to create a fundraiser with the goal of collecting non-perishable food to help offset their urgent need for food.
Throughout the week of Monday March 22, labelled bins will be set up outside of the Foster Hewitt Athletic Centre doors, the Upper School front entrance and the Prep main entrance.
Students can drop off canned goods during school hours or families can drop off non-perishables anytime during the day.
The most needed items are listed below, however all canned goods will be greatly appreciated.
Please check the expiration date on all items. Items in greatest need are:
- Peanut butter
- Canned fish and meat
- Canned fruits and vegetables
- Rice, grains, lentils, beans
- Dried pasta
- Pasta sauce and canned tomatoes (whole or crushed)
- Cans of soup and stew
- Powdered, canned and tetra pak milk
- Baby food and formula
Thank you for your help in providing food for those in need,
Ethan and Owen
