French teachers at the Prep are often asked by parents, “How can I support my son with French?”

Your son receives consistent exposure and instruction to French in his class and in the school, and has access to a variety of French resources. We use textbooks, dictionaries, stories, readers, novels, games, magazines, movies and audio-visual material, as well as online resources in our classrooms. Your son can participate in an event such as French public speaking, French movie lunch, French jogging club and French trivia. Your son’s French teacher is also available for extra help.

The Wilder Library has a selection of French books, dictionaries and encyclopedias, as well as online resources available to students.

There are also a number of organizations that help support parents who want to support their children in learning French or are looking at additional opportunities:

Alliance Française
Alliance Française Toronto has a variety of educational and cultural programs available in French for students. http://www.alliance-francaise.ca/en/

Canadian Parents for French
A national network of volunteers who value French as an integral part of Canada and which is dedicated to the promotion and creation of French Second Language opportunities for young Canadian.

The online world of the Internet has also helped to make more French resources more accessible to students, parents and teachers.  Your son’s French Teacher is using online resources and apps to enhance learning, expose students to French around the world and to teach him how to use these tools effectively and properly.  Students are asked not to use translators, instead students in Forms 5 to 7 are provided with the Ultralingua app on their computer which has a dictionary and verb conjugator. A good tool to proofread and edit one’s texte is “Le bon patron” (http://bonpatron.com/en/).
