IE University (Spain) Junior Advisory Board (JAB)

High school students in Year 11 worldwide are invited to apply to IE’s Junior Advisory Board (JAB). Selected students will participate in this one-week event and will be granted an 80 per cent scholarship to study at IE University. During the week, students take part in a series of online workshops and conferences with top senior research professors from different fields of study to develop tools and work on the final project. Register here by February 28, 2021.  


University of Waterloo – enter the quantum world (virtually)

Students can apply for a freevirtual enrichment program called Quantum Cryptography School for Young Students (QCSYS). Hosted by the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo, QCSYS will run from August 3 to 13, 2021 and will be offered online.

At QCSYS discover how physics, mathematics, computer science, engineering and more combine into one of the most exciting topics in modern science: quantum information.

Students will get to:

  • See how the world works at the quantum level
  • Understand phenomenon like quantum superposition and entanglement
  • Learn how quantum technology will transform computing, imaging and cryptography 

This school is for students who are:

  • In Years 11 or 12 (or equivalent) — exceptional Year 10 students may be accepted, space permitting
  • Age 15 and older
  • Enrolled in or have completed Year 11 mathematics or higher (Year 11 physics is recommended but not mandatory)
  • Fluent in English

Workshop: Creating a Spontaneous Composition

Friday, February 12 at 12 p.m. 

This workshop with SCAD painting professor Kent Knowles will explore methods for establishing a focal point within a composition while practicing creative dexterity with acrylic paint. Points of interest will include mapping out a composition, blocking-in light and shadow and manipulating a dynamic color palette.

Join SCAD advertising and graphic design chair Duke Greenhill to learn simple methods to tell captivating, successful stories – and become a better writer while you’re at it – by exploring the top 10 secrets of Hollywood’s master screenwriters.

Drawing Workshop: Using Music/Sound to Inform and Motivate the Narrative in Visual Composition

Friday, February 19 at 12 p.m.

Join SCAD foundation studies professor Jime Wimmer for a discussion, demonstration and exercises on how sound and music impact the images we see in film, animation and art. Learn how art elements and principles of composition are used as narration elements to compose an image and connect the story to an audience through the use of music and sound.

Materials needed: Pencils, colored pencils/markers, sketchpad (students may use iPads if they choose; Procreate is recommended)

Workshop: Free-range animation (stop-motion)

“If stranded on a desert island, I would still need to animate!” This workshop with SCAD animation professor Tina O’Hailey uses found objects and a little technology to explain animation basics and storytelling. Bring your iPhone, iPad, tablet or smartphone with a camera. We will download free apps to use.

Workshop: What is Typography?

Friday, February 26 at 12 p.m.

With Dean Ballas, SCAD associate dean of School of Communication Arts and School of Fine Arts, participants will engage in a series of typographic scavenger hunt exercises resulting in a deeper understanding how industry visual communicators leverage typography to communicate their message.
