English Language Learners begin transition to UCC
|It was a special orientation for 14 new English Language Learners (ELL) boarders, geared to helping them share something about themselves and their culture, and begin their transition to UCC on August 30.
Each year the Wernham & West Centre for Learning faculty, Mary Gauthier and Jody McLean, meet with boys who are both new to the UCC boarding community and new to being in English language classrooms.
“I admire the courage it takes for a boy to not only step out and try a new school but also to challenge himself to attend an English school,” says Gauthier, executive director of the centre.
Gauthier and McLean both rely on the help of student leaders, attended the ELL workshop in past years themselves. These students reflect on their experiences in their first few weeks at UCC and also offer great insight, humour and new friendships to our new boarders.
McLean also lives on the grounds and in addition to her role as the Centre for Learning Senior Division co-ordinator, is available to support boys in their evening studies two nights a week.
The workshop included a range of activities and of course the annual walk to the Village for ice cream.
