Creating routines and habits with the Wernham West Centre for Learning Middle Years Division
This fall, life has been busy at the Wernham West Centre for Learning (WWWCfL). September and October were spent helping the boys set up routines to make this year’s learning journey a smoother one!
Ms. Carter and I support Middle Year boys. We have taught lessons on how to use your agenda to help prioritize and plan your work. Students in Year 6 and 7 have a choice between a paper or digital agenda. Regardless of format, we have stressed the importance of having a nightly plan to complete homework and review key concepts in class notes. Boys who need extra organizational support can drop into homework club located in the WWCFL, Mondays to Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m.
Our next lessons will focus on study strategies. In the coming weeks, we will share a Middle Years study strategies website I developed over the summer with Year 7 form adviser and subject coordinator, Emilia Martin. The website focuses on strategies to make the study experience feel active and efficient. Please check out the following link to the website.
Finally, the WWCfL is partnering with the Health Centre to host a mindfulness club at morning recess on Wednesdays. We provide a space in the CfL for boys to learn guided meditation techniques, enjoy a snack, colour, or read as a way to take a reset break before classes resume. Encourage your child to participate if he is looking for a quiet space during the day to ‘chillax’.
Parents often ask me what they can do at home to support their son. I’ve included the list of strategies presented at the October MYP Parent Information Evening with MYP coordinator, Joe Smith. We look forward to continuing to work with your sons this year.
