Chinese Speech Contest

On October 15th, Upper Canada College boarding students won second and third Prize at the 2017 Panda Cup Chinese Speech Contest held by the Chinese Consulate-General in Toronto, and the Chinese Culture and Education Society of Canada. Year 10 student Billy Shi placed second out of around a hundred elementary and high school students and won $200 while Year 10 student James Liao and Year 9 student Adrian Hui both won the third Prize, winning $150 each. They topped most students from other Ontario and Manitoba schools in giving speeches on the topic “China-Canada Relationship” to highlight Chinese culture and history, and to celebrate Canada’s 150 th anniversary. Shi talked about his experiences and thoughts about the Chinese New Year and Christmas, reflecting on building up a strong cultural relationship as a foundation of China-Canadian relationships.

“With a strong relationship between China and Canada, not only can citizens from both countries travel to the other side of the globe and tour around the nature, but also experiencing and learning deeply about a different life style, as well as a different culture history”, said Shi in his speech.

Liao reflected on his experience going back to China during the past summer where he had a great opportunity to exchange some culture background with local peers. Hui focused on the history of early Chinese immigration to Canada, providing examples of diplomatic communication between Canada and China, such as Canadian lobsters business in China.

Shi and Hui are taking Mandarin courses taught by Jane Li at UCC, which helps them keep up their language skills, while learning more about Chinese literatures. Liao is an active member in the Chinese club, which is a place to help boys who are interested in learning Chinese culture.
