Boarders support SickKids charitable pond hockey tournament

On Sunday, Feb. 3, 10 boarders ventured 45 minutes north of the city to work as volunteers at a pond hockey tournament designed to raise more than $160,000 for the SickKids Charitable Giving Fund, as well as for the Mario Lemieux and Pittsburgh Penguins Foundations.
The boys arrived at the Kimel family farm, just south of Lake Simcoe. by 7:30 a.m. They helped build the infrastructure for the tourney and took charge of refereeing, score keeping and rink maintenance for the day. Twelve teams played a minimum of three games and an eventual champion was declared following a hard fought battle refereed by Jay Kim, Alex Cinquino and Jeremy Iacobacci.
It was great for boarders to see that Old Boy Jeff Chong was the chief organizer and that several Old Boys were playing in the tournament; former varsity player, and one time Toronto Maple Leaf Matt Irwin’s team won the tournament. One highlight for everyone participating or working was the arrival of former Toronto Maple Leaf and current Pittsburgh Penguin Phil Kessel.
Throughout the day, Jack Edelist, Kosei Satoh, Finn McDermott, Michael Goralski, Nick De Chazal and Willis Ahn, Jay Kim, Alex Cinquino and Jeremy Iacobacci all played incredible roles refereeing and scorekeeping and generally helping out wherever necessary to help make the inaugural tourney a wonderful success. A big thank you to Jeff Chong for thinking of UCC when he was looking for boys he knew would go the extra mile to help facilitate a great cause.
