Annual Mother’s Day drive toiletries needed

On May 12, mothers around Toronto will be celebrating Mother’s Day with their families. A day of celebration, but for hundreds of moms in the city, it will be a day spent with their children in the safety of women’s shelters.

The boys of Upper Canada College want to make sure these mothers are celebrated as equally as their own. To accomplish this they are organizing a campaign to collect small toiletry items that will be packaged and delivered to selected shelters on Mother’s Day. This year we are excited to announce that the families of the Prep will be joining us in this incredible initiative.

The boys need us to start collecting all of those hotel soaps, shampoos and body lotions that are made available to us during hotel stays. With the holiday break around the corner many families will be travelling, so please fill your suitcases with all those wonderful items.

For those of you not travelling, you may purchase toiletries from any of your favourite cosmetic departments, spas, or hair salons or re-gift any items you may receive as presents. Anything that a mom would enjoy to pamper herself is welcome.

Please drop your donations at the reception desk in the Upper School or main office of the Prep. Please contact Linda Carvalho at lcarvalho@ucc.on.ca if you have any questions about drop off.

If you have any connections to pharmacies, cosmetic companies, dental offices or hotels that may be interested in donating some of these items to this drive please contact Vivien Cappe at vivien.cappe@sympatico.ca or 416-710-8239.

This year will be the 12th anniversary of the Mother’s Day Project and we hope to make it the most successful year in our history. Last year, over 800 children were given beautiful gift bags from this project to give to their moms on Mother’s Day. The children were so excited to have something to give their mothers and the mothers were brought to tears by the fact that people they did not know, cared about them so much, so, we ask you all to spread the word and hopefully surpass last year’s drive.

Due to last year’s incredible success we were able to not only provide gift bags for Mother’s Day but were able to provide bags to women who arrived at the shelters over the following weeks.  We were also able to donate boxes of items to New Circles Community Service who support over 3,000 families in the community living in poverty and we have been able to add two more shelters to our list.

On behalf of the boys of UCC, we thank you for your support.
