A message from Year 5

Are you looking forward to Friday, May 10? We are definitely building excitement for Exhibition in Year 5. The boys are currently finishing their research. They have identified their lines of inquiry and created seven different questions based on concepts (form, function, connection, causation, change, perspective, and responsibility). They have spent the last several weeks accessing books, websites, and articles to answer their questions. From this large base of research, the boys will begin planning their action, designing their “teaching others” activity, writing their pitch and creating their trifold

As part of the collaborative process, the boys worked in their Exhibition groups to form a central idea. The central idea is a phrase that both unites each line of inquiry in the group, as well as guiding them down their path of research and discovery. Some examples of their lines of inquiry include, “Understanding the quality of our food can impact our health.” or “Technology can affect us physically, emotionally and mentally.”

In math, we are exploring fractions through addition, subtraction, multiplication and division algorithms and problem-solving. This unit requires the boys to read the question carefully to ensure they know what is being asked. As this math unit poses some tricky challenges, we are reinforcing growth mindset and the positive impact a healthy struggle can have. The boys are sharing their knowledge in a variety of ways, for example, formulas, visuals, explanations.

The boys have also begun their spring literature circles. They were given a variety of choices, and through a book talk, when each book was explained the boys selected the novel they wanted to study. They will have four weeks to complete their novel. Each week, they will meet with their group to discuss the theme of the week. This upcoming week, we will focus on inferencing.

Thank you for coming to our Student-Led Conferences last Friday. It was a pleasure listening to the boys to share their learning. We look forward to seeing you on May 10.
