Heads Up

Welcome to Heads Up, your one-stop source for news about your son’s upcoming activities and events.

A message from Year 3

The boys of Form 3 have had a few very busy weeks. We have completed our “Forces” unit and look forward to further exploring our third unit of inquiry, “Adapt to Survive.” During this unit students will be exploring the idea of adaptation. We will look into what adaptations are, how they help predators, and the reasons for why some animals are unable to survive their habitat. During this unit, boys will write a large report investigating one animal. We use this unit as a vehicle to teach paragraph writing and research skills.

As we move closer to the holidays, please note the following. If you are planning on leaving early for the holidays, please inform your son’s form teacher. As much of our work involves small groups and partner work, it is important to try to plan ahead for absences. It is impossible to replicate what happens during the school day by sending extra homework, but with advance warning we can minimize the impact to other students.

When you are off for the holidays, we encourage all families to continue to read daily, practice mathletics.ca, and take advantage of Razkids.ca. As you read with your sons over the holiday, please continue to ask your sons to orally summarize what they are reading during their nightly reading homework. This can be done whether they are reading alone or reading with you. Summarizing is a skill that can be improved with practice. Is your son giving you too many details or too little?

The focus should be on the main events that move the story along. In addition, please do not forget that even though your sons can read, it is still very important to read with them every few days. Reading to your sons provides them with a good model of expressive reading and having them read to you will help to develop their fluency skills. And finally, do not forget to include your sons in reading during real-life – shopping lists, newspaper articles, recipes, maps, catalogues – everything!

We thank you for your continued support.
